Italian version . book Read_Me 2.3 Reader <book> Nifca Publication ISBN 951-8955-74-3 The definition of 'software art' still has a long way to go to enter the Oxford Dictionary, but the Read_me festival is doing a good work in defining its characteristics and cultural background. This essential reader enriches the 2.3 edition of this exhibition. This agile book, divided in two parts (critical texts / interviews and reviews of the works), puts together the debates and perspectives which make 'software art' a controversial and stimulating subject. Software art is centered on a view of software as an active subject of every work of art, a view made evident by the reviews written by a team of experts, a sort of 'best of' subdivided into peculiar categories, complete with small screenshots and texts which succeeds in being a rich cross-section of the more non-conventional uses of software code. The categories list highlights many of the unpredictable developments, such as: algorithmic appreciation, browser art, code art, data transformation, digital aesthetics research and development, digital folk and artisanship, existing software manipulations, institutional critique, political and activist software and system disfunctionality. |
