Italian version Ê .hacktivism 25.03.03 Stop War, media resistance. The importance of the media war front is demonstrated by the tremendous efforts on the big networks' part, which chose to stake a lot on the Internet. In Italy, RAI (the State-controlled broadcasting corporation) has set up third-level domain (www.obiettivoiraq.rai.it), as if this war was something like the soccer world cup, and everybody is opening special sections on their sites to trasmit 'last minute' news. On the other hand, against the media lies about 'smart bombs' and the statement by US Central Command general Tommy Franks ('We won't count the enemies' bodies'), a website called 'Iraq Body Count' was created. It includes a freely downloadable banner continuously updated with the number of iraqi civilians who died under the bombings. The banner is equipped with a counter showing a minimum figure (the one given by the USA) and a maximum one (the one given by Iraq), so the visitor can have a rough idea of the truth. In Italy, Peacelink has set up a Mediawatch aiming to unmask the false, partial or inexact informations about this war and other past and present wars. Indeed, USA itself spreaded leaflets throughout the iraqi territory trying to subdue the population, and there haven't been significant cases of defacement of official websites, except the quello della American Academy of Diplomacy site. Among the artistic anti-war statements there's the one by Futurefarmer, who led a movement of 140 designers from all over the world, who changed their splash page with the 'No blood for oil and profit' sign. During the March 21 session of the Unesco Day of Poetry in Florence, supervised by Caterina Davinio (Technopoetry for Peace), there will be an exhibition of videos, digital images and visual poems against war, made by tens of artists. |
