30.10.03 nostalG, twisted flight simulator.
nostalG is the latest effort by Retroyou, who were among the first authors of videogame art, that is, of patches and code mutations which modify common videogames, changing their images, their characters, twisting their environments and therefore their very rules. nostalG, recently included in the Games, computergames by artists exhibition, is a part of the nostalG [ nostalgia + G forces slavery ] project, centered on modifications to commercial flight simulators. In nostalG the player must accomplish the impossible task to find out what the cockpit instruments mean in order to move around in a completely flat and dull world (2d). Every modification induces doubts on the illusory potential of virtual space and is made using 'parameters editors' and reverse engineering. Joan Leandre, the man behind Retroyou, has been active in the independent media world for years, first as experimental videoartist (OVNI-UFO - Unidentified Frame Observatori), then as code manipulator.
